Sungyang Academy

Sungyang Academy features traditional Korean wooden structures positioned on the slopes of Mount Janam, incorporating natural elements into its architectural design.

The academy transformed from a residence of scholar Chong Mong-ju in the 14th century into a formal educational center in 1573 during the transition between Koryo and Joseon dynasties.

The academy represents the shift from Buddhism to Confucianism in Korean society, serving as a center for philosophical studies and intellectual discourse.

Visitors can access Sungyang Academy through guided tours of Kaesong's historical sites, which include various monuments and educational structures from the Koryo period.

The academy holds the designation of National Treasure 128 in North Korea and forms part of the Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong UNESCO World Heritage complex.
