Gyodong Bridge, Road bridge in Ganghwa County, South Korea

Gyodong Bridge is a cable-stayed structure with tall concrete pylons and steel cables that support its deck across the water. The crossing links multiple areas of the county and provides an important road connection for vehicles and traffic.

Construction of Gyodong Bridge began on 25 September 2008. Work was delayed in 2011 when foundation piles installed in the tidal flats toppled and had to be lifted and rebuilt, pushing the opening past the planned end of 2012. The bridge opened temporarily during the 2014 Lunar New Year holiday, was test-opened on 20 June 2014, and officially opened on 1 July 2014.

Gyodong Island lies inside a civilian restricted zone, so crossing the bridge involves a Marine Corps checkpoint: non-residents obtain a pass and show it at the bridge entrance. The bridge is also called Gyodong Yeonyukgyo, and it replaced the water crossing to the island when it opened on 1 July 2014.

The structure uses a strategic position to link several separated areas of the county in one single crossing. This placement makes it a critical connection point that brings settlements on both sides together.
