Palgongsan is a mountain rising to 1,193 meters, spreading across multiple districts including Chilgok County, Gunwi County, Yeongcheon, and Gyeongsan. The terrain features numerous valleys and ridges with dense forest coverage across its slopes.
The mountain was the site of the Battle of Gong Mountain in 927, when forces from Hubaekje and Goryeo clashed on its southern slopes. This conflict marked a pivotal moment in the regional power struggles of that era.
The mountain hosts several Buddhist temples from the Silla period, with Donghwasa Temple and the Gunwi Triad Buddha Grotto standing as protected national treasures. These structures remain central to the spiritual practices visitors encounter while walking the slopes.
