Biebrza National Park, National park in Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland.
Biebrza National Park is a protected area in northeastern Poland that covers wide marshland along the Biebrza River. The area alternates between open bogs, wet meadows and woodland sections separated by narrow waterways.
The protected area was created in the mid-1990s to preserve the wetlands along the river from drainage. The region previously served for centuries as remote grazing land and military territory on the eastern frontier.
The park includes small wooden villages where local people still harvest hay in the wet environment and tend the grassland. The river landscape also draws anglers and wildlife watchers who explore the open terrain from the water.
The trails run over wooden boardwalks and riverbank strips that can be damp in spring and require sturdy footwear. Access is through several villages on the edge of the park, with Goniadz and Osowiec being the most familiar.
The area shelters one of the last large moose populations in Central Europe, which can be seen near the water especially at dawn. The wide lowland bogs also serve as a resting point for migratory birds from northern regions on their way south.
