Metropolis GZM, Metropolitan area in Silesian Voivodeship, Poland
Metropolis GZM joins 41 municipalities across central Silesian Voivodeship, with Katowice as its administrative center. The area encompasses several major cities and forms a connected urban cluster in southern Poland.
Formation began in 2006 with 14 cities and led to official establishment on July 1, 2017. The metropolitan region was created to unite the connected cities of Upper Silesia under single administration.
The region combines traditions from Upper Silesia and Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, representing different historical territories. Visitors can see these cultural differences reflected in local architecture and regional customs.
The region spans a large area with several transportation hubs and is best explored by car or regional trams. Many municipalities have good bus connections between them, making movement across different parts easy.
The metropolitan region has close ties with the Czech city of Ostrava and forms a cross-border area. This cooperation shows itself in shared economic and cultural projects that connect both countries.
