The museum holds a collection of complete outfits and accessories, focusing mainly on clothing from the 19th century. The displays show various styles and details from that era, ranging from everyday wear to formal attire.
Anna Moryto began collecting historical dresses and accessories in 2004, acquiring original nineteenth-century pieces from trade and auction houses in the US and London. From 2012 her collection toured Polish museums, starting at the Henryk Sienkiewicz Museum in Oblęgorek. In December 2018 the private gallery XIXgallery became the Museum of Historical Costume at Kwiatowa Street 14/2; the Polish museum register lists its founding as 2019, with the inaugural exhibition on 29 March 2019.
The museum's name links costume history to the everyday life of women in the 19th century. Temporary exhibitions have examined underwear and corsets ("Czego oczy nie widzą", 2020) and wedding and mourning dress ("Od bieli do czerni", 2022). A digital project, MariaWilska.pl, presents paper miniature dresses and dolls made by Maria Magdalena Wilska (1923–2005).
The museum occupies a small tenement flat at Kwiatowa Street 14/2 in central Poznań, so groups move through a compact space. It is open all year from Tuesday to Saturday; admission is charged. Exhibits change, as only temporary displays are shown, so check what is on before travelling.
The museum holds one of the largest private collections of nineteenth-century dresses in Poland. This collection is remarkable because such original pieces are rarely found elsewhere.
