Monastery of St. Theodosius

Monastery of St. Theodosius is a religious complex carved into limestone with multiple chambers, underground caves, and a main church building. The site integrates surface structures with natural caverns that served as living quarters and burial spaces.

Saint Theodosius established this site in 476 as a monastic center that grew to house around 700 monks and nuns. The community endured a major attack in 614 when Persian forces invaded and damaged the complex.

The site serves as a pilgrimage destination for Orthodox Christians who visit to venerate Saint Theodosius. Visitors experience the deep spiritual meaning the place holds for believers who come from distant regions to pray and spend time in reflection.
