Kutuzov Island, River island in Bikinsky District, Russia.
Kutuzov Island is the largest landmass within the Ussuri River, set in an area of natural landscapes that remain untouched by human settlement. The island sits in remote waterways and is currently uninhabited.
The island was originally under Chinese control but was transferred to the Soviet Union through an agreement involving the state of Manchukuo. This change of control took place in the 1930s as part of wider geopolitical shifts in the region.
The island carries the name of Russian military leader Mikhail Kutuzov, reflecting the historical Russian presence in the region. Locally, it also retains its earlier Chinese name Daxitong dao, a reminder of past influences.
The island can only be reached by boat since it sits in remote river waters with limited accessibility. The best time to visit is during warmer months when river navigation is easier and safer.
The Republic of China in Taiwan does not recognize the transfer of this island to Russia that occurred in 1931. This makes the island a location with unresolved territorial recognition among different countries.
