Ostankino pond, Artificial pond at Ostankinsky District, Russia.
Ostankino pond is an artificial body of water set within the grounds of the Ostankino Palace complex in northern Moscow. It is bordered by tree-lined paths and open lawns, forming the central open space of the estate park.
The pond was dug in 1584 as part of a noble estate and later became central to the Sheremetiev family's country residence. After the 1917 revolution, the estate opened to the public and the pond has remained a protected site ever since.
The pond sits at the heart of the Ostankino estate and draws a natural line between the palace and the surrounding park. People walk along its banks to enjoy the view of the old wooden palace reflected in the water.
The pond is a short walk from the VDNH metro station, making it easy to reach without a car. The paths around the water are flat and open year-round, though the park feels most welcoming in late spring and summer.
Despite being man-made, the pond developed a self-sustaining fish population over the centuries, including carp and pike that were never reintroduced after the estate changed hands. This makes it one of the few urban ponds in Moscow with an unbroken ecological history.
