Ostankino Tower, Television tower in Moscow, Russia
Ostankino Tower is a television and radio tower in Ostankinsky District that ranks among the tallest freestanding structures in the world at 540 meters. The reinforced concrete structure rests on ten supports arranged like petals and carries two observation platforms along with antennas for broadcasting operations.
Construction started in 1963 under engineer Nikolai Nikitin and was completed in 1967 to mark the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. The structure became the first in the world to reach a height exceeding 500 meters.
The name comes from the historic Ostankino village, now part of the district bearing the same name. Visitors can experience the tower as a symbol of Russian broadcasting technology, still actively transmitting signals to millions of households.
The two observation levels sit at different heights, with the lower one accessible year-round and the upper one opening when weather permits. Visitors should bring identification and can purchase tickets on site for the different levels.
A rotating restaurant with a glass floor sits on one of the middle levels and turns once per hour to offer diners constantly changing views. The tower also serves as a concert hall for special events in the enclosed interior space.

This collection brings together skyscrapers that showcase advances in modern engineering and architecture worldwide. These structures rise above metropolises and reshape city horizons, from the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab in Dubai to the CCTV headquarters in Beijing with its two linked towers. Each building reflects a unique architectural approach and technical innovations tailored to its environment. The selection spans all continents and features buildings with various functions. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, 452 meters high and connected by a sky bridge, stand alongside New York’s One World Trade Center, which reaches 541 meters. The Lakhta Center in Saint Petersburg is notable for its twisted glass facade, while the Torre Costanera in Santiago offers panoramic views of the Andes. Whether residential buildings like the Eureka Tower in Melbourne or commercial structures such as the Kingdom Centre in Riyadh, these constructions demonstrate how contemporary architecture shapes 21st-century cities.
Moscow offers photographers a wide range of subjects covering centuries of Russian history and architecture. The city combines Orthodox cathedrals with colorful domes, classical theaters and museums, large parks, and modern art galleries. From the medieval fortress walls of the Kremlin to the monumental buildings of the Stalin era, Moscow presents itself as a city of contrasts. Landmarks include Saint Basil's Cathedral on Red Square, the Bolshoi Theatre, and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Parks such as Gorky Park and Zaryadye Park with its floating bridge provide green spaces in the heart of the city. Historical estates like Kolomenskoye and Kuskovo preserve the architecture of past eras. Museums such as the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum, and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art display works from different periods. The Stalin skyscrapers continue to shape the skyline, while places like Patriarch Ponds, Arbat Street, and Sparrow Hills offer glimpses into Moscow life.
Some buildings have caused waves of criticism when they were built. Their unusual shape, large size, or high cost led to strong reactions. The Louvre pyramid in Paris, with its glass structure in the middle of a classical palace, surprised Parisians in the 1980s. The Guggenheim Museum in New York, with its white concrete spiral, was compared to a washing machine when it opened in 1959. The Montparnasse Tower, which has overlooked the Parisian neighborhood since 1973, even led to a law banning tall buildings in the city. These structures show how modern design can challenge local views and change how a city is seen. Other buildings still cause debate. In Mumbai, the Antilia tower rises 27 floors to hold one family. It shows wealth in a city with many crowded areas. In Pyongyang, the Ryugyong Hotel has stayed unfinished for decades. It’s a empty pyramid with 105 floors, showing big ambitions. In London, the Fenchurch Street skyscraper, called the “Walkie-Talkie” because of its shape, reflects the sunlight so strongly it can melt car parts. Places like these show how some projects raise questions about their purpose beyond looks. They involve space use, money, and how they affect daily life.
