Башня Абаевых

The Abaev Tower stands 17 meters tall with walls reaching 1.8 meters thick at its base, featuring observation slots and arrow holes throughout its structure.

Built in the 16th century by order of Balkarian prince Alimurza Abaev, this tower served as a strategic observation post and shelter during military threats.

The tower represents traditional Balkarian architecture with its distinctive interior design, including pointed arch doorways and windows unlike other regional fortifications.

Located in abandoned Kunnum village, the tower can be reached by taking a bus from Nalchik to Upper Balkaria, followed by a hiking trail through mountain paths.

The structure maintained its original form as it functioned as a residence for the Abaev princely family until the late 19th century on its lower floors.
