Kabardino-Balkarski Nature Reserve, Protected mountain reserve in Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia.

Kabardino-Balkarski Nature Reserve is a protected area in the North Caucasus Mountains that preserves over 250 glaciers and numerous mountain peaks, many of which rise above 5000 meters. The landscape is defined by three river valleys that separate mountain ridges and create different habitats for the region's plants and animals.

The reserve was established in 1976 to protect the diverse ecosystems along the main ridge of the North Caucasus Mountains. This decision came as part of a broader effort to safeguard the region's valuable natural resources and mountainous landscape for the future.

The reserve reflects the deep connection between local communities and the high mountains, where people have developed their way of life adapted to steep slopes and harsh conditions over many generations. The valleys still show traces of this mountain heritage, shaped by centuries of knowledge about surviving and thriving in these dramatic surroundings.

To visit the area, you need to obtain a permit in advance from the local administration, and you should be prepared for marked hiking routes and harsh mountain conditions. Access depends on the season, as routes become difficult or impassable during the winter months.

The reserve contains the Bezengi Wall, a dramatic vertical rock face rising more than 2000 meters, which attracts mountaineers from around the world. This natural formation is a major draw for serious climbers, but the surrounding peaks also offer rewarding views for hikers of various skill levels.
