Lagurka, Medieval church in Mestia Municipality, Georgia.
Lagurka is a medieval church in the Mestia region of Georgia situated on a high hill at about 2200 meters elevation. The structure combines yellow limestone blocks in a hall layout with a two-storey bell tower, while its interior features a semicircular apse and a stone tripartite iconostasis.
The building dates to the 10th and 11th centuries, reflecting early medieval church architecture of the Caucasus region. In 1112, royal court artist Tevdore added frescoes depicting biblical scenes and figures to the interior.
The church serves as the principal Christian shrine for the Svan community, where solemn oaths are sworn before Byzantine icons held within its walls. Visitors can observe the deep spiritual importance this place holds for local pilgrims and families who continue these traditions today.
The church is accessed through a single entrance on the south side, allowing visitors to explore the interior and its religious artworks. The remote mountainous location means you should expect challenging terrain and variable weather conditions.
The sanctuary houses the Shaliani icon, a Byzantine repoussé artwork depicting the Crucifixion that holds special spiritual significance for pilgrims. An annual festival on July 28 brings believers together to perform rituals centered on this revered object.
