Ngee Ann City, shopping and commercial centre located on Orchard Road
Ngee Ann City is a large building complex in the heart of Orchard Road with two towers of about 26 floors each. It houses the Takashimaya department store, the Kinokuniya bookstore, the Best Denki electronics shop, numerous boutiques and shops, and a large food court in its basement level.
The complex opened in the early 1990s and replaced an older building on a site that had served as a burial ground about 70 years earlier. Architect Raymond Woo drew inspiration from the Great Wall of China, designing the towers as symbols of strength and unity.
The complex serves as a meeting place where locals and visitors gather for shopping, dining, and socializing with friends and family. The civic plaza in front hosts community events, performances, and seasonal celebrations that bring together people from across the city.
The complex is easily accessible by train from Orchard Station and has extensive underground walkways connecting it to nearby shopping centers. Wide corridors and clear signage make it straightforward to navigate inside.
The two towers were designed to resemble Chinese door gods, traditionally representing protection, generosity, and community. An Art and Creativity Area that opened in 2005 sets this complex apart from typical shopping centers with regular art displays and workshops.
