Saint Joseph's Institution, independent school in Singapore, Singapore
Saint Joseph's Institution is a secondary school for boys in Novena that was established over 170 years ago by the De La Salle Brothers. The school offers two main educational paths: a four-year Secondary Education Certificate Programme and a six-year Integrated Programme leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
The school was founded in 1852 and was the first institution of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in the Far East, initially located on Bras Basah Road. In 1988, it relocated to the Malcolm Road campus, while the original historic building was preserved and converted into the Singapore Art Museum.
The school's name honors Saint Joseph and reflects its Catholic identity through daily practices and values. Students experience this heritage through religious education, community service, and the school motto 'Pray and Work,' which guides the culture of discipline and respect seen throughout the campus.
The school is located in a well-established neighborhood with gardens and open spaces on campus where students gather during breaks. The campus has been modernized with contemporary facilities for learning while maintaining the school's original spirit and traditions.
During World War II, the original school building served as a Red Cross hospital and was later placed under military administration during Japanese occupation. After the war, the Brothers returned and classes resumed, illustrating the school's resilience and enduring legacy.
