College of Medicine Building, Singapore
College of Medicine Building, Singapore, Medical monument in Outram Park, Singapore.
The College of Medicine Building is a three-story Neoclassical structure in Outram Park with Doric columns and decorative friezes along its exterior. These architectural features depict medical practices from Ancient Greece and shape the building's distinctive appearance.
The building was completed in 1926 and served as the first medical school in British Malaya under the name King Edward VII College of Medicine. This institution shaped the development of medical education across the region.
The facade displays carved elements by Cavaliere Rudolfo Nolli, including a Roman eagle above the main entrance representing authority and learning. These artistic details shape how the building communicates its role as a center for medical knowledge.
The building houses offices for the Ministry of Health, Singapore Medical Council, and College of Family Physicians. As a visitor, keep in mind it functions as an active government building, so access may be limited to certain areas.
Community leaders raised 80,000 Straits dollars in 1905 to establish this institution, with merchant Tan Jiak Kim making substantial contributions. This local funding shows how deeply the community invested in medical education.
