Doğubayazıt, Border town in eastern Ağrı Province, Turkey.
Doğubayazıt is a town in eastern Ağrı Province near the Iranian border, situated at about 1,625 meters elevation. It sits surrounded by mountains including Mount Ararat and overlooks the plains beyond.
The settlement was rebuilt after regional conflicts and renamed several times, finally becoming known as Doğubayazıt in the 1930s. Archaeological remains show the area has been inhabited since ancient times.
The town reflects layers of different peoples who have inhabited the region, visible in how residents interact with sacred sites and in crafts passed down through generations. Local life maintains traditions from several cultural communities that once coexisted here.
Visitors can reach the town through airports in Iğdır or Ağrı, both connected to major Turkish cities. The high elevation means the climate can be cold, especially outside the warmer months.
The area contains ancient cuneiform inscriptions from the first millennium BCE carved into a nearby rock formation. These markings reveal that advanced civilizations were present here thousands of years before the modern town was established.
