Beşparmak Mountains, Mountain range in Muğla Province, Turkey
Beşparmak Dağı is a mountain range in Muğla Province, in southwestern Turkey, located east of Lake Bafa and forming part of the western Menteşe mountain system. The range has long, winding ridges and steep slopes, with five distinct peaks that give it a recognizable outline against the sky.
The area around Beşparmak Dağı has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, with rock paintings in the region dated to around 6000 to 5000 BC. In ancient times the mountains were seen as a sacred place linked to a sky deity, and during the Byzantine period monasteries were built on the slopes.
The name Beşparmak means five fingers in Turkish, a reference to the five main peaks that stand out clearly when seen from a distance. Locals and visitors alike use this image to identify the range, and it shapes how people talk about and relate to these mountains.
Trails follow the ridges and natural contours of the terrain, and many are narrow, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading out. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions, though the range can be visited throughout the year.
The rock paintings found in this area are unusual because they show groups of human figures rather than the hunting scenes with animals more common elsewhere. The ancient city of Latmos, once located at the foot of the range, was founded around 300 BC and abandoned by the late 4th century AD.
