Istanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam, Science and technology museum in Gülhane Park, Türkiye.
The museum occupies a former Imperial Stables building and displays around 585 replicas of scientific instruments developed between the 9th and 16th centuries. The exhibition spans about 3,500 square meters divided into twelve sections covering astronomy, medicine, architecture, physics, mathematics, and other scientific fields.
The institution was established in 2008 under the direction of Professor Fuat Sezgin, who dedicated his career to documenting scientific developments in the Islamic world. The replicas were designed and crafted at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt based on historical research.
The collection reflects how scholars in the Islamic world advanced knowledge and shared discoveries across different regions. You can see how these ideas shaped everyday tools like clocks, measuring devices, and medical equipment that people actually used.
The exhibition spreads across multiple levels, so wearing comfortable shoes and allowing time to explore each section thoroughly is helpful. The location in Gülhane Park makes it easy to visit the surrounding gardens before or after your museum visit.
The Elephant Clock at the entrance is more than decoration, as it demonstrates mechanical principles that craftspeople from across the medieval Islamic world had perfected. The device cleverly uses water and gears to show movement and measure time.
