Gukeng, rural township of Taiwan
Gukeng is a rural township in Yunlin County, Taiwan, centered on coffee cultivation across rolling farmland and gentle hillsides. The Green Tunnel, a tree-lined path formed by mango trees over two kilometers long, anchors the area alongside weekend markets and roadside cafes.
Gukeng's development accelerated during Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan, when coffee cultivation was introduced due to favorable climate conditions. Earlier traditions of bamboo shoot farming were later supplemented by extensive orange plantations, both shaping the agricultural foundation visible today.
Gukeng's identity centers on coffee cultivation, a practice that shapes daily life and leisure activities across the township. The coffee farms and roadside cafes reflect how residents and visitors engage with the land and local traditions.
The area is best explored by car or bicycle, particularly along the Orange Fragrance Bicycle Path, a route of about 19 kilometers through scenic farmland. The Green Tunnel is accessible during daylight hours and feels least crowded in early morning or late afternoon.
Gukeng once thrived on Mazu bamboo shoot cultivation across expansive farms, a crop that was exported widely but later eclipsed by coffee prominence. Remnants of this agricultural heritage survive in specialized farms and occasional food festivals that keep this earlier tradition alive.
