Lulin Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Nantou County, Taiwan
Lulin Observatory is an astronomical research facility located on Mount Lulin at about 2,862 meters (9,387 feet) elevation in Nantou County. The site contains several telescopes, including a main one-meter telescope and multiple smaller instruments designed for sky observation and tracking of celestial objects.
National Central University established this research facility in 1999, placing Taiwan on the map for modern astronomical research. The choice to build on this high mountain elevation allowed for better observing conditions than many other locations.
The observatory stands as a symbol of Taiwan's scientific capability, where researchers work to understand and document what happens in the night sky. This work connects the island to a global community of astronomers who share findings and collaborate on discoveries.
The facility is difficult to reach and sits on a mountainside, so visitors should check ahead about access and when it is open to the public. The high elevation means weather can change quickly and warm clothing is needed, especially as the sun goes down.
From this location, researchers made Taiwan's first discoveries of asteroids, supernovae, comets, and near-Earth objects. These observations have uncovered important celestial bodies and events that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.
