Shoushan Zoo, Public zoo on Shou Mountain in Gushan District, Taiwan
Shoushan Zoo is a public zoo on Shou Mountain in Gushan District that extends across multiple levels with dedicated sections for small animals, mammals, predators, birds, reptiles, and nocturnal creatures. The enclosures use the natural mountain terrain, allowing visitors to observe animals in settings that mimic their original habitats.
The facility began operations in 1978 as Hsizuhwan Zoo, later relocating to its current location in 1986 following campus development at Sun Yat-Sen University. The move allowed for expansion and integration of the mountain terrain into the design of the animal enclosures.
The entrance features Taiwan's largest wall mosaic, while walkways display artwork created by local school students throughout the grounds.
Admission costs forty New Taiwan Dollars for adults and twenty for children aged six to seventeen, with free entry for seniors over sixty-five and children under six. The paths wind through different elevations, so comfortable shoes and enough time to explore are advisable.
The zoo sits against a mountainous backdrop on three sides, incorporating natural terrain into animal habitats and viewing areas. The hillside position allows visitors to view many animals from above, a perspective rarely possible in flat zoos.
