Mount Shou

Mount Shou rises above Kaohsiung city with natural trails winding through dense forest where Formosan macaques live among the slopes and trees. The paths connect different parts of the forested landscape, offering access to various viewing points and wooded sections throughout the area.

Indigenous groups used this mountain as a sacred site for ceremonies long ago, and it kept this spiritual role through the centuries. As the city developed around it, temples and structures were added to serve the religious needs of growing communities.

Several temples line the pathways where local people come regularly to pray and practice their spiritual beliefs. These sacred spaces show how religious life and nature are woven together in daily community practice.

The trails are accessible year-round and located near public transportation, with parking areas at the base of the walking paths. Wear proper footwear and watch for slippery or uneven sections, especially after rain.

Formosan macaques are most active during early morning and evening hours and can be spotted feeding or playing. These wild primates often leave the forests to explore areas where visitors are walking.
