大成館, Military building in New Taipei City, Taiwan
Dacheng Hall is a multi-story institutional building in New Taipei with a solid concrete structure and rows of rectangular windows across its gray facades. Today it houses the Industrial Design Department of a local university, complete with workshops and digital fabrication spaces.
The building was constructed in the early 1900s as a military barracks for the Japanese Imperial Army during the occupation period. After World War II, it was repurposed and eventually became home to educational programs in design.
The Industrial Design Department within the building implements a design philosophy focused on creating products that prioritize human comfort and environmental sustainability.
The building is open to visitors on weekdays during daytime hours, and you should stick to the main entrance area while respecting university security guidelines. Since it sits on a university campus, it is best to check in advance whether certain areas are accessible to the public.
The structure maintains its original architectural elements while housing modern design facilities, including specialized workshops and digital fabrication laboratories.
