虎頭山, Mountain peak in Taoyuan County, Taiwan.
Tiger Head Mountain (虎頭山) is a forested hill on the edge of Taoyuan city in Taiwan. Several hiking trails of varying length wind through dense tree cover and lead to open viewpoints looking out over the city below.
During the Qing Dynasty, the hill was used as a military lookout to watch over the surrounding lowlands. This strategic role explains why it appears repeatedly in old records as a control point for the Taoyuan area.
At the summit there is a temple where locals come to light incense and pray on a daily basis. During regional festivals, the trail fills with worshippers carrying offerings, giving the mountain a very different feel than on ordinary days.
The trails are manageable for most visitors, including those without much hiking experience. The trailhead sits close to Taoyuan city center and can be reached easily by public transport or private vehicle.
The mountain's name comes from a natural rock formation near the top that, from the right angle, resembles a tiger's head. Finding that exact viewpoint has become a small game for visitors, and many people make the climb just to try to spot it.
