Eastern Beach, Sand beach in Gibraltar, GB
Eastern Beach is a sandy shore on the northeastern side of Gibraltar, running between the Rock and the Spanish border near the airport. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available to rent, and the water has marked swimming areas reachable from several points along the seafront.
The beach was developed in the early 20th century as a recreational area, opening up this stretch of coast to leisure use for the first time. The construction of the nearby airport later changed the landscape around it.
Eastern Beach is one of the few places in the world where you can swim in the sea while watching planes land just a short distance away. This combination draws curious visitors who come as much to watch the runway as to enjoy the water.
The beach is within walking distance of the town center and has good swimming conditions on most days. Mornings tend to be quieter, while afternoons draw more people, particularly in summer.
The sand runs right alongside the runway of Gibraltar International Airport, one of the shortest commercial runways in Europe. Swimmers can literally sit beneath the flight path as planes pass just overhead.
