Devil's Tower, Archaeological site near Devil's Tower Road, Gibraltar
Description
Devil's Tower is an archaeological site in Gibraltar featuring a limestone cave that extends four meters into the cliff face. The cave measures roughly ten meters in height and one meter in width, positioned about nine meters above sea level.
History
Excavations conducted between 1925 and 1927 by Dorothy Garrod uncovered a Neanderthal child skull, known as Gibraltar 2, along with numerous stone tools and animal bones. These findings rank among the most important evidence of human presence in the region during prehistoric times.
Culture
The site shows evidence of how Neanderthals prepared food, revealed through burnt bones and charcoal left inside the cave. These discoveries help us understand the daily life of people who lived thousands of years ago.
Practical
The site is accessed via Devil's Tower Road, which serves as a helpful landmark for visitors navigating to the archaeological area. It is best to visit during daylight hours since the cave sits high on the cliff face and can be viewed from the road.
Did you know?
A military tower that gave the site its name was demolished in 1940 to clear the firing line for Gibraltar's defense during World War II. The name remained in archaeological records even though the original structure disappeared long ago.
