Rock Gun Battery, Artillery battery at the North Face of the Rock, Gibraltar.
Rock Gun Battery is an artillery position on the North Face of the Rock of Gibraltar. It sits at a mid-level elevation and commands wide views across the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea from its raised location.
British forces established this battery in October 1779 during the Great Siege, hauling a 24-pounder gun up the rock face. In World War II, troops rebuilt it and added a platform for anti-aircraft guns.
The site represents Gibraltar's military engineering expertise, demonstrated through the complex construction methods used to build fortifications on steep terrain.
Access to the site is restricted and under Ministry of Defence control. Visitors need special permits to reach the battery location.
The gun was hauled up the sheer rock face using block and tackle systems, a remarkable feat with 18th century technology. This method reveals the ingenuity and skill workers needed to work with extreme terrain.
