Middle Hill Battery, Artillery battery on Middle Hill, Gibraltar
Middle Hill Battery is a military site with a rectangular concrete enclosure that positions six large guns in two rows of three placements each. The grounds contain original magazine and storage rooms within the concrete emplacement, with one space converted into the Aardvark Bar.
The battery began in 1727 with a signal gun and expanded by 1900 to house large-caliber guns with extended range. Over more than a century and a half, the site grew from a simple signal station into a full defensive position.
The Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society uses the concrete platform to study bird migrations between Europe and Africa. The site has become an important observation point for nature research and conservation work.
The site is easy to navigate at this elevation and offers open access to various sections of the fortification. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and watch for uneven concrete surfaces, especially after wet weather.
The site contains two observation stations built between 1893 and 1902 that served as cells for military observation purposes. These specialized structures show how military planners developed early methods of fire control and target detection.
