Gateway Plus, Urban redevelopment project in Birmingham, England
Gateway Plus is an urban redevelopment project in Birmingham that transformed New Street railway station and the adjacent Grand Central shopping centre. The work involved new entrances, an enlarged concourse, and a new exterior clad in reflective stainless steel panels.
New Street station dates back to the 19th century and was later replaced by a dark, poorly regarded 1960s complex after World War II. The Gateway Plus project started in 2009 and finished in 2015, replacing that structure with a far more open building.
New Street station is one of the busiest rail hubs in the UK, and many people pass through it daily as part of their commute or shopping routine. Its direct connection to the Grand Central shopping centre reflects how Birmingham today combines transit and everyday life in a single space.
The station sits in the heart of Birmingham and is within walking distance of many central points in the city. Signage inside the building clearly guides visitors toward platforms, the shopping centre, and the various exits.
Throughout the construction, the station had to remain fully operational, meaning all major work was carried out during short overnight windows without stopping train services. The Navigation Street Bridge required a method of installing columns that had never been used in quite the same way on an active rail site.
