Hart Side

Hart Side is a mountain summit in Cumbria that reaches 756 meters above sea level. The top features grassy slopes scattered with rocks and marked by two small cairns that stand at the highest point.

The area around Hart Side shows signs of old mining activity when workers dug trenches searching for minerals in the ground. These marks from past mining work remain visible in the landscape today.

The name Hart Side comes from the red deer that once roamed this area, a reminder of the wildlife that has inhabited these fells for centuries. Walkers today rarely think about these creatures while climbing, yet the name keeps that connection to nature alive.

Several walking trails lead to Hart Side's summit starting from places like High Row and Dockray across open access land. The routes are straightforward with steady climbing on generally good ground.

Hart Side is part of an andesite ridge formed by volcanic activity around 450 million years ago that connects to the nearby peak of Green Side. This ancient volcanic origin explains much of the rocky character visitors see today.
