Martin's Cave, Limestone cave on the eastern cliffs of the Rock of Gibraltar
Martin's Cave opens directly toward the Mediterranean Sea from an elevation of 700 feet above the coastline, featuring natural limestone formations.
A British soldier named Martin discovered the cave in 1821 when he fell onto a narrow ledge in front of its entrance.
Archaeological excavations in the 1860s revealed medieval swords, pottery, and stone implements, contributing to Gibraltar's historical understanding.
Access to the cave requires following the Mediterranean Steps nature trail and obtaining permission due to the entrance being secured by a padlock.
The cave housed electric generators during World War II, with original cable installations still visible in the ceiling through drilled holes.
