Nahant occupies a peninsula with two near-islands connected by a sandy isthmus measuring 1.5 miles in length to the mainland Massachusetts.
The land served as a grazing area for livestock when English settlers first arrived in 1630, becoming the smallest municipality in Essex County.
The Marine Science Center of Northeastern University conducts research activities at East Point, where military installations previously stood during World War II.
The Johnson Elementary School provides education for local children, while students from grade seven attend schools in the neighboring town of Swampscott.
The community resides on a total area of 1.24 square miles, with water surrounding 93 percent of the town's boundaries.
