Hearthstone Castle, Historic castle in Danbury, United States.
The three-story stone structure contains sixteen rooms, eight stone fireplaces, and stands at 650 feet above sea level overlooking southern Danbury.
Portrait photographer Elias Starr Sanford commissioned architect Ernest G.W. Dietrich to design and construct this summer estate between 1895 and 1899.
The castle features Italian woodwork throughout its interior, along with locally crafted wrought iron chandeliers and lamps by Cephas B. Rogers Company.
The castle sits within Tarrywile Park property and requires navigation of an 800-foot gravel driveway to reach the main structure.
Local granite for construction was transported via a small railroad built specifically for the purpose of moving materials during the building process.

These castles are located away from the main tourist destinations and represent different periods of European and American architecture. From medieval fortresses to royal residences, each castle tells its own story. The buildings occupy distinctive locations: on islands, in mountain caves, or surrounded by vineyards. The collection includes structures from various centuries that have remained relatively unknown due to their remote locations or historical circumstances. Some of these castles served as defensive strongholds, while others functioned as aristocratic homes or administrative centers. These sites offer visitors the opportunity to experience historical architecture in quiet settings and learn about the regional characteristics of different countries and periods.
