Hearthstone Castle, Historic castle in Danbury, United States.
Hearthstone Castle is a three-story stone structure in Danbury containing sixteen rooms and eight stone fireplaces throughout its layout. The building rises prominently with multiple levels and detailed exterior stonework.
Portrait photographer Elias Starr Sanford commissioned architect Ernest G.W. Dietrich in 1895 to design this summer home. Construction was completed in 1899, marking the end of a significant building project from that era.
The rooms inside showcase Italian woodwork that reflects craftsmanship from the period, alongside wrought iron fixtures created by local artisans from the Cephas B. Rogers Company. These details shape how the space feels as you walk through it.
The location sits within Tarrywile Park and requires walking along a gravel driveway to reach it. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for an uneven path.
A small railroad was built specifically to transport locally quarried granite to the construction site during building. This temporary rail line was used only while the structure was being erected.
