Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, National seashore on Lake Superior, United States.
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore comprises 21 islands and roughly 12 miles (19 kilometers) of mainland shore featuring red sandstone cliffs and dense forests along Lake Superior. The landscape shifts between rocky viewpoints, wooded areas, and sandy coves where the water and wilderness meet directly.
For centuries, Native Americans navigated these waters and used the islands as important places. Later, French explorers arrived, followed by German and Scandinavian settlers who shaped fishing and trading in the region.
The eight lighthouses standing on six islands show how people have relied on these waters for navigation and trade. Walking around them tells the story of maritime communities that once depended on these guiding lights.
Visit between May and October when weather is mild and ferry services run regularly from Bayfield, Wisconsin. Choose between ferry rides to the islands, guided kayak tours, or renting a boat depending on how much exploring you want to do.
When Lake Superior freezes in winter, the mainland sea caves transform into glittering ice formations that can be reached on foot across the frozen water. This rare seasonal phenomenon lasts only a few weeks and offers a chance to experience these hidden spaces in a completely different way.
