Bronson Windmill

Bronson Windmill is an eight-sided wooden structure that rises 105 feet tall, featuring a polygonal hip roof and rectangular windows that allow natural light inside. The building was designed to pump water from a deep well into a large storage tank for the property's needs.

Frederic Bronson built this windmill between 1893 and 1894 on his Verna Farm estate to manage water supplies for the property. The structure earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 due to its historical importance.

The windmill represents how late 19th-century farmers in Connecticut solved the challenge of moving water to their land for crops and livestock. It shows the practical ingenuity farmers needed to make their operations work in this region.

The windmill is located on Bronson Road opposite Fairfield Country Day School and remains visible from public streets. You can observe the structure from nearby roads without needing access to private land.

Today the structure serves as a cell phone tower, blending its original purpose with modern technology. This dual use has helped keep the building standing and functioning on the landscape.
