Westport Observatory

Westport Observatory is an astronomical facility in Westport, Connecticut, with a 12.5-inch Newtonian reflector telescope mounted under a dome structure. The location sits elevated above sea level and serves as a base for both public viewing programs and amateur astronomical observation.

The site began as a Nike missile defense installation in the 1950s before the Army transferred it to the town in 1963. This conversion from military to civilian use transformed the location into a community astronomy facility.

The Westport Astronomical Society brings together local astronomy enthusiasts who organize public viewing nights where visitors can observe the night sky together. These gatherings reflect the community's shared interest in understanding the cosmos and spending time under the stars.
