Frances H. and Jonathan Drake House
Frances H. and Jonathan Drake House, Greek Revival residence in Leominster, Massachusetts
The Frances H. and Jonathan Drake House is a 1.5-story wood-frame home with a gabled roof and clapboard siding, located on Franklin Street in Leominster. The structure features a three-bay front design and underwent major restoration work to return it to its mid-1800s appearance.
The house was built in 1848 and served as a documented Underground Railroad station that provided shelter to escaped slaves. Its role during the pre-Civil War years made it an important location in the movement against slavery.
The house served as a refuge for people escaping slavery and held meaning for the local community during the 1800s. Visitors can see the physical features today that show how the family helped those in danger.
The house is located in a residential neighborhood and is easy to reach by car. Visitors should check in advance about visiting hours, as access may be limited due to its private status.
In the front parlor sits an original trap door that leads directly to the basement, built specifically to help people escape from slavery. This hidden element shows how carefully the family planned their protective measures.
