Graduate Group in the Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World, Doctoral program at University of Pennsylvania Museum, United States.
The Graduate Group in Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World is a doctoral program at the University of Pennsylvania that focuses on ancient civilizations through research and study. The program combines classroom learning with hands-on archaeological fieldwork at multiple sites across the Mediterranean region and the Near East.
The program was founded in 1898 and has produced over 150 dissertations on Mediterranean and Near Eastern archaeology. This long history of research has contributed to significant discoveries across multiple excavation sites throughout the region.
Students examine civilizations from Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the Near East through archaeological evidence, ancient languages, and material culture studies at Penn Museum.
Prospective students should know that the program offers complete funding for five years, covering tuition and stipends for accepted applicants. Students must complete 20 course units and serve as teaching assistants for two semesters during their time in the program.
Doctoral students have the opportunity to participate in excavations at different sites, including Minturnae, Kourion, Gordion, and additional locations across Turkey, Israel, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. This distributed fieldwork allows students to engage directly with remains and sites from multiple ancient cultures.
