Hart-Miller Island State Park, Maryland

Hart-Miller Island State Park is a nature preserve spanning 1,100 acres (445 hectares) of beaches, marshlands, and varied habitats within Chesapeake Bay. The terrain offers different landscapes and supports a rich abundance of wildlife and plant life.

The island was originally used as a sand mining and landfill site before being converted into a protected state park. This transformation marked a major shift toward preserving the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.

The island serves as a learning hub where visitors can discover Chesapeake Bay ecosystems through organized nature programs and environmental initiatives. Such activities help people understand the importance of this habitat for local wildlife and plants.

The site is accessible only by boat, so visitors should bring their own supplies and provisions. Facilities on-site are limited to basic restrooms and picnic areas.

The isolated location within Chesapeake Bay creates an undisturbed habitat where numerous bird species, such as herons and egrets, rest during migration. Bird watchers can spot rare migratory birds here that are difficult to find in other locations.
