Hawks Nest State Park, State park and historic site in Fayette County, United States
Hawks Nest State Park covers around 270 acres of woodland along the New River Gorge, where sheer cliffs rise roughly 750 feet (230 meters) above the water. The site includes a lodge with guest rooms and dining, multiple hiking trails, and boat rentals for fishing and river activities.
The park was established in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a Depression-era organization that employed workers and built stone and log structures. These original buildings laid the groundwork for the recreational facilities that continue to operate today.
The museum here tells stories about coal mining that shaped the region and how the river and nature were central to local life. The exhibits show what daily work and community looked like before and after the dam was built in the 1930s.
The eight hiking trails offer different levels of difficulty and length, making them suitable for various visitors. Bringing appropriate footwear and weather gear is important, as conditions vary by season, and boat rentals are available on-site for those interested in water activities.
An aerial tramway carries visitors from the mountain summit directly down to river level, providing a quick way to reach water activities without a long hike. This type of transport is uncommon in eastern U.S. parks and makes the descent an experience in itself.
