Babcock State Park, State park in Fayette County, West Virginia
Babcock State Park is a protected forest area covering 4,127 acres with a lake, a creek valley, and networks of trails for hiking. The grounds include a working mill, camping areas, and cabins available for overnight stays.
The park was established in 1934 when two conservation work camps arrived to build initial facilities and develop the land. This federal program provided work during a period of economic hardship while protecting natural areas.
The Glade Creek Grist Mill reflects how grain processing was central to mountain communities in this region. You can watch the traditional craft being practiced and understand its role in local heritage.
The park has 52 camping sites with electrical hookups and bathhouses, plus 28 cabins for multi-day stays. Trails are well-marked and include rest areas along the routes.
The mill produces real cornmeal and buckwheat flour using original techniques, and visitors can buy the fresh product directly. The building itself combines salvaged parts from three different historical mills brought together in one location.
