Altamont Hotel

The Altamont Hotel is a brick building shaped like a T with a raised basement and a Victorian veranda that wraps around the entire structure. The building occupies a central position in downtown and is defined by its distinctive architectural features.

Built in 1897 by contractor Robert H. Dickerson, the hotel replaced an earlier structure that had burned down at the same location. This rebuilding allowed for a more modern construction that served the city's growing business needs.

Four generations of women managed the house and shaped its reputation as an important place for business visitors and those with courthouse business. The family-run style created a personal quality that distinguished it from other lodgings for many decades.

The hotel sits in downtown Fayetteville directly across from the courthouse, making it easy to find in the immediate center of the city's government and business district. Its central location makes it a convenient reference point for visitors conducting business in town.

On the third floor stood a special room known as the hung jury room, where juries stayed during extended deliberations. This detail shows how closely the building was woven into the everyday work of the courthouse.
