Highlands Natural Pool, Natural pool in Ringwood, United States.
Highlands Natural Pool is a swimming basin in Ringwood fed by fresh stream water from the Wyanokie Highlands. The water flows through a concrete structure carved into the hillside, creating a simple bathing area within the landscape.
Members of the Nature Friends organization hand-dug the pool in 1935 from the natural terrain at Camp Midvale. The project reflected the era's effort to create recreational spaces for working people.
The pool grew out of a working-class movement that valued nature and togetherness through outdoor recreation. Visitors can still feel this spirit today as they gather in the cool water surrounded by hillside woodland.
The pool operates from late spring through early fall, with daily hours in summer and weekend-only access during shoulder seasons. Bring a towel and expect cool water temperatures, as there is no heating system.
The water receives no chemical treatments, allowing small aquatic creatures to live in the stream-fed basin. This natural approach makes it unusual to spot wildlife while swimming in an American public pool.
