Hook and Ladder House No. 5-Detroit Fire Department Repair Shop, gebouw in Detroit, Verenigde Staten van Amerika
Hook and Ladder House No. 5 is a historic fire station in Detroit built from red brick and stone with a steep hip roof and small attic dormers. The 1888 original structure was expanded with a smaller repair shop in 1911 and a larger repair facility in 1917, both featuring decorative terra cotta trim.
The structure was designed in 1888 by Malcomson and Higginbotham and operated as an active fire station until 1956 serving the Eastern Market neighborhood. It gained recognition as a Michigan State Historic Site in 1975 and was added to the national register in 1997.
The name Hook and Ladder House refers to the firefighting equipment once used by crews at this station. Today visitors see how the building reflects the practical needs and values of early fire protection in the city.
The building sits on Russell Street and is easy to reach on foot, with its red brick walls visible from the street. Visitors can view the restored exterior architecture from outside or step inside where residential lofts and a restaurant now occupy the space.
The fire station closed in 1956 but its repair shops were later used by the city for vehicle maintenance and repairs. Today it operates as FD Lofts with over 30 apartments, and a Thai restaurant on the ground floor has welcomed diners since 2002.
