Hurricane Mountain Fire Observation Station, Fire lookout station on Hurricane Mountain, Essex County, US
The Hurricane Mountain Fire Observation Station is a steel tower on a mountain in the Adirondack range at an elevation of about 3,694 feet (1,125 meters). The tower was built from prefabricated parts and was designed to help spot fires across the region from high above.
The tower was built in 1919 by the Aermotor Corporation using prefabricated steel parts. It was an example of how new technology was being used to monitor large forest areas.
The station shows how people in the early 1900s worked to protect forests from fire. Visitors can see the remains of where an observer lived and worked to watch over the land.
The location is reached by two hiking trails that lead to the summit with views across the landscape. Visitors should be prepared for mountain terrain and weather changes throughout the day.
The tower was assembled from prefabricated parts like a kit, making it an early example of industrial assembly methods. This approach allowed such structures to be quickly built at multiple remote locations.
