Joel N. Cornish House, Second Empire mansion in South Omaha, US.
The Joel N. Cornish House is a three-story mansion with a full basement, wooden roof construction, and mosaic tile floors throughout the structure. The facade features load-bearing brick walls with symmetrical double-hung arched windows.
The house was built in 1886 for Colonel Joel Northrop Cornish after he relocated from Hamburg, Iowa. Following the family's departure in 1911, the building was converted into apartments.
The mansion displays French Second Empire architecture with its mansard roof and ornate porches that characterize the South Omaha streetscape.
The building is located on South 10th Street and displays well-preserved original features with solid brick walls and stable structural elements. A broad central concrete stairway leads to the front doors and provides clear sight lines to the facade.
The east facade porch is supported by triple wooden corner columns, an unusual architectural feature for its time. These distinctive columns are a striking visual element when viewing the side of the building.
