Joslyn Castle, Scottish Baronial mansion in Gold Coast Historic District, Omaha, US
Joslyn Castle is a mansion in Omaha built in the Scottish Baronial style and spans four stories with 35 rooms inside. It contains a reception hall, music room, ballroom, library, and a gold drawing room among its many interior spaces.
Construction took place between 1903 and 1907 when George A. Joslyn, founder of the Western Newspaper Union, and his wife Sarah commissioned the building. The property was later recognized as a historic landmark and remains a significant part of the Gold Coast Historic District.
The residence became part of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, with formal gardens and landscaping designed by the renowned landscape architect Jens Jensen. Visitors can walk through the carefully planted outdoor spaces and see how the grounds were intentionally arranged to complement the building.
The property is open for guided tours and access is typically arranged through organized visits that show both the interior and grounds. Plan to spend enough time to explore both the rooms inside and the outdoor areas spread across the five-acre estate.
A separate carriage house tower from 1901 stands on the grounds, representing an earlier structure that predates the main mansion itself. This building provides an interesting contrast to the later Scottish Baronial architecture and shows how the estate evolved over time.
