Edgar Zabriskie Residence

The Edgar Zabriskie Residence on Hawthorne Avenue is a Queen Anne house featuring a round turret, varied wall surfaces, and tall rooflines. Multiple gables and chimneys accent its distinctive profile and give the structure visual complexity.

The house was built in 1889 and was among the first structures in Bemis Park. It earned recognition as a historic landmark at the national level in 1978.

The residence reflects the architectural approach of Benjamin Fowler and Charles Beindorff, designers who created numerous important buildings throughout Omaha in the late 1800s. Their work shaped how affluent neighborhoods in the city came to look.

The building sits in an established residential neighborhood and is easily viewed from the street. Keep in mind that the interior is typically not open to the public since it remains a private home.

The residence stood alone on a hilltop above the park for ten years before the neighborhood gradually developed around it. This isolated setting shaped its early role in what would become an established community.
