Kensington, Residential neighborhood in Brooklyn, United States
Kensington is a residential neighborhood in Brooklyn with brick row houses, detached Victorian homes, and pre-war apartment buildings that stretch mainly along Ocean Parkway and Coney Island Avenue. The streets are lined with large trees, and the homes display different architectural styles from various periods.
The area was originally Dutch farmland in the 1600s and became a residential district in 1885 after Ocean Parkway was completed and the land was annexed to Brooklyn. After this development, families quickly moved into the new neighborhood to live in the newly built homes.
The neighborhood shows the daily life of multiple communities: shops sell South Asian, kosher, and Latin American goods, and religious buildings sit side by side. Visitors see this mix in the restaurants, bakeries, and on the streets where different languages are heard.
The neighborhood has good connections to Manhattan through several subway stations on the IND Culver Line and various local and express bus routes. Visitors should watch for uneven sidewalks and take time to explore side streets, where it is less crowded.
The intersection of McDonald and Church Avenues received the designation Little Bangladesh in 2022, marking the growing presence of the Bangladeshi population. Restaurants and shops in this corner show authentic Bengali cuisine and culture that many visitors overlook.
